Working for Retirement

Congratulations! You’ve taken the first step…

. . . but will you make it before it’s too late?

Working for Retirement: What It Really Means

By taking our quiz you’ve taken the first step in realigning your thoughts on your relationship with work and with time and you’ve probably already come to the conclusion that you’re working for retirement!

When we think about retirement, it’s mostly in terms of saving money, accumulating assets, paring down financial responsibilities, downsizing, getting ready for a final move, writing end-of-life directives, adding to our memory books. All of that is fine.

But should we really be sacrificing our current selves for who we think we might be decades from now? Must we wait until our later years before we actually enjoy the fruits of all our labor. Do we dare postpone living our best lives today to wait for some loosely defined period in the future before we really start enjoying life?

There are no guarantees and when we did the research and asked the oldest of the elders what regrets they had, not one of them said they wished they put in more hours at the office!

Why do we do this? I believe it is because of our false relationship with time. The human condition is somehow programmed so that we always think we are, in some sense, immortal – we all think we have more time.

We console ourselves with the idea that when the work is finally done, then we can be our whole selves, right? But maybe things could be different…

That false relationship with time – thinking there’s always more of it - ask any of the 4 million-plus Americans who have recently staggered economists with their mass walkout, The Great Resignation, though, and you’ll likely be reminded for all kinds of reasons that, well…you don’t always have more time!

So sure, we can work and save for the future, but the truth is that good work, honest work, ethical work, work with meaning – these are cornerstones of our identity that we need right now. Best to be sure they are part of the foundation of your days today. Can you dare to dream that?

Remember, you are responsible for your carpe diem. You have to do the work that moves you. You must live the life you want. And you must start living that life right now. You cannot postpone because otherwise, you may not have the chance.

Don’t you think you owe it to yourself?

Dig a little deeper. Figure out why you are working for retirement instead of working with soul. And what you can do about it. Take our full assessment and work through these ideas and more.
